Titlepage.TV, thes website "for people who love books" is up. This is a Daniel Menaker hoted American version of "Apostrophes." The first installment features Richard Price, Susan Choi, Colin Harrison and Charles Bock.
Whenever anyone, including me, wonders why we don't have an American version of the famous French TV show where writers come together and books are discussed --the answer is that it's not so easy to do well.
Menaker has a good on camera presence but there is something about the show that is too stiff, too formal. Menaker begins by interviewing one author at a time about his or her book, and the problem is that the other authors look bored or zombied out.
I'm sure, with time, it will improve. The trick, in my opinion is to deliver the way people who really do love books actually talk about them when they get together. If the truth is that when writers get together what they really talk about is money -- well then give us some of that.
Anyhow that is my cultural conversation programwould WILL be like.
