ANALYSANDS BEWARE: RATES ABOUT TO GO UP!
There was an article in today's New York Times about shrinks to the wealth. Dr. Karasu revealed that he charges $600 for a 45 minute session. I have no doubt that many psychiatrists and psychologist who read that and are charging $250 and less will raise their rates before summer';s end to at least $300, thinking it a relative bargain.
THE NEW YORK TIMES DISCOVERS TOM ROTHMAN 's hosting gig. which was discussed on this blog recently. Could they be reading Tommywood?
AMERICANA THE BEAUTIFUL or a visit to the new mall
Drove out to Glendale to the new Caruso developed Mall, The Americana, at Brand and California in Glendale. It's sort of The Grove on Steroids, with housing to boot. It's got a H&M, a Barney's Coop, a Pacific Theaters multiplexes, restaurants from Katsuya to Frida and probably the most ethnically diverse crowd I've seen in LA , or more to the point, groups of diverse people mingling in ways that don't seem to happen in LA. That being said, it's crowded and the flow is not so well organized --the whole things if still settling in, but it already seems like a happening.
Just as the Grove, rather than killing the Farmer's market, increased its business 30% and gave it new life. so too the mall is already having a spill over effect onto Brand Avenue. One one block alone, there was an Armenian/Lebanese restaurant next to a Japanese one, next to a Chinese one, next to a yogurt store next to a Vietnamese Pho restaurant. Across from Armenian and Russian banquet halls. And there's the Alex theater right there too.
TELL NO ONE
a French movie based on a Harlen Coben film is packing 'em in based on word of mouth and very strong reviews. here's another: Go see it. It's an engrossing suspense thriller that takes you across several strata of French society, old and new, monied, working class, and indigent -- while keeping you on the edge of your seat. There are several elements that probably would have never survived development notes if this had been made in the US, such as the great number of new characters introduced throughout the movie, as well as the Agatha Christie-type explanation near the end that explains the crime in all its layered complexity and consequences. The announcement of the American remake should be moments away.
THE WACKNESS
is the movie where Josh Peck shows what he can do and graduates to mature role. It's not exactly a comedy, more of a coming of age and a first love story in the Holden Caulfield tradition....
A NIGHT AT THE SILENT MOVIE THEATER and a visit to Canter's Deli
Had a great time seeing "Hula" a pre-code Clara Bow silent film. THe titels were hilarious and the morality or lack theerof was entertaning. Not sure the movie would make it pass the studio execs and their develoment minions today. Plus ca change.....
The film was preceded by a few shorts and both accompanied by 96 year old Bob Mithcell playing live accompaniment on piano and organ. A real treat.
Also a word about the crows -- it reminded me of going to revival theaters in New York such as Thalia or the REency or the BleeckerStreet cinema, or even the New Yorker, that mixes of older cineaste, young film students, couples of every sort and combination. It felt good to be abck among them. At least for a night.
Speaking of treats, went over to Canter's which I haven;'t been to in years and I must say the Lox eggs and onions held their own against others in LA, sweeter in some ways, the eggs more buttery, less salty or overcooked than at other delis. Canter's reamins a place where tennage hispters wander in on their dates, where families eat with several generations present, where wierdo loners spin their movies and novels in tehir heads and the waiters and stafff who have seen it all over the years continue to serve.
