O Brave New World!

Barack Obama’s victory comes not as a surpise — it was clear more than a month ago and certainly after the first debate that he had won, but as an affirmation.

It is an affirmation, as Obama himself said, of the American Dream that any child can grow up to be President.

An African-American, that is to say a child of an African parent and an American mother, a child of mixed race, which in American still means he’s considered black, is the 44th President, 40 years after segregation and Jim Crow, becoming President of a country where 12 of our past presidents were slave holders.

Barack’s election also confirms the American public’s acknowlegement of the failure of the Bush adminstration in matters both domestic and foreign and the mismanagement of the economy by Bush & co, and the greedy gang of Wall Street apparatchniks and hedge fund carnies whose free market laissez faired us into a perfect storm of economic panic and concern.

It is a brave new day, where one needn’t be afraid to be thoughful, educated, learned, intellectually curious for fear of being labelled “elitist”; where helping others is more valued than self-interest, where we look at the world not in terms of us and them, but begin by acknowleding that we are all in this together.

Amen.
