Bart out at Variety; Freidman out at Fox

Peter Bart is stepping aside as editor of Variety after a 20 year run. He will retain a title and a blog and column but Tim Gray will take over as editor. I have no idea of the financial payout involved butmy guess is that Bart was a victim of his success — he became too expensive a figurehead for Cahners to maintain in this economy.
Meanwhile Roger Friedman is out at Fox as their entertainment and gossip colmnist. Ostensibly the reason is that he illegally dowloaded the Wolverine prequel and reviewed it. That in doing so he was engaging in and encouraging piracy. Hmmm, I wonder if there isn’t a freedom of the press, aclu case there?????
