the blog

I’ve been blogging for about a year now, and I thought I would take a moment to assess my thoughts and feelings about it.

I began convinced it was essential and necessary — I’m not sure that’s true, but it did help increase web traffic and readership, and as I’;ve adopted facebook it makes it possible to update to that audience as well. And now as twittering seems an inevitable and somehow urgent necessary next step — as in ” all the kids are doing it” peer pressure, blogging seems to be still be something to do.

Yet, I still find that it is neither as pleasurable as composing a column or article essay, and not necessarily as emotionally or intellectually rewarding. I don’t really write in as great depth or push myself to think as deeply — I don’t revise and do several drafts. I find myself too reactive, and at the same not reacting to enough things in a timely fashion. I also find that my attention in my blog is more scattershot.

Which leads me to another thought — what has become of the diary and the letters of….. are these all subsumed in the blog?

I realize that at it’s best a blog should have a distinct voice and a focused parameters. In my own case, i will consider in my next go around of web design reorganize to reformat my information to slot into categories and list of top ten food, movie, etc… Or maybe not.

Also blogging is another full time job that does not really earn its keep — and that fault is mine, as I focus on the content, i.e. the writing, rather than the monetizing of it (to the extent that is possible). Nor have I really stretched to aggregate or invite other contributors which is another way to grow a website.

Anyone by now what started out as an exercise in self assessment is now boring me –  and so I will go on to the next topic.
