The surge

There are many reasons men of a certain age wake up in the middle of the night — they may be alimentary, digestive, prostate related or anxiety driven, and god knows I have experienced all of those, but there is another reason that sometimes combines with the above called the surge and it can be deadly.

The surge is something that happens in the male body and acknowledges a rush of body chemicals — in some cases it can be a sign of an oncoming heart attack, which can be powerful and fatal, — that’s the deadly part.

It can be like a rush of metamphetamine, speeding up the brain and driving it to all kinds of thoughts — making the immediate fall back into sleep impossible.

The ideas and thoughts that came can be brilliant, creative, analytical or they can be critical, self-loathing self-drestructive, and once riding on the surge they can feed the anxiety lurking waiting for its chance to assume center stage in the consciousness.

Riding the surge is like being on a boogie board in a storm drain wash, you are riding it out careful of all the places you can crash.

Last night the surge was leading me to all sorts of dark places, but I recalled a strange dream I’d had a few nights before, dreaming of being behind the wheel of a strange new vehicle that was evolutionary and revolutionary in its energy saving approach, two cars that were tied to each other and used pulling on each other to power itself. And as I thought of that car speeding forward and the other receding until it moved forward, a calm came over and I fell back asleep.
